59M Americans Did Not Have Health Insurance in Early 2010

About 59 million residents of the U.S. lacked health insurance in 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The number represents an increase of four million over the previous two years.

The report, released by the CDC yesterday, is based on data from?the National Health Interview Survey that included interviews of nearly 90,000 U.S. residents from 2006 through the first three months of 2010.

According to the CDC report:

59.1 million U.S. residents had no health insurance in the first three months of 20109% of U.S. adults lost health insurance coverage during the survey period22% of U.S. adults ages 18 to 64 are uninsured

High Rate of Chronic Disease in Uninsured
The CDC also reported that more than two out of five people who had no health insurance at some point during the past year had one or more chronic diseases. According to the report, 15 million U.S. residents without health insurance had asthma, diabetes or high blood pressure.
