Joseph Paduda weblog managed care group health, workers ‘ compensation and auto insurance, which covers the cost of health care, health policy, the isolation of health research and medical News insurers, employers and health care providers.

«Coventry result-doing quite well |Main | Comp Conference … » What is driving the cost of California’s comp

I have the honour to have the European marine casualty actuarial Society annual CWCI fills in this morning’s Alex Swedlow with co-presenting. Alex shared CWCI: the latest research findings on California’s work comp system and, in particular, the impact of the directives set out in annex II under the influence.

Some of the News was rather frightening and some encouraging.

For example, the drug from the dollar decreased by 95% after the repackaged drugs based on a percentage of the loophole was closed at the beginning of the year 2007.Repacks cost two to four times more than the purchased retail pharmacy, so this was good news as a matter of fact, the number of the payer of the same script.

Sticking with the positive: n analysis mentioned CWCI reforms, according to the system costs drove to don 13-25 billion dollars in the years 2005 to 2008. costs is unfortunately once again normally their rising, in part, that the mileage pharma now accounts for 13% of the work comp medical costs in California.

In particular, the effective list of narcotic drugs used in the dollar increased II TO REGULATION (EC) NO 414% since 2005 Q2 2009 during the more than 500% of the number of scripts jumped.

CWCI analyze effects of these drugs claim costs and encountered a strong correlation between, on the one hand, by adding a list (II) fees and the exploitation of workers from the risks related to adverse effects for injured. Swedlow announced that received the highest level of applicants from all kinds of dosage was 200% higher than the lower medical costs applicants receiving a factor.

My bet is the biggest problem is due to the inappropriate prescribing habits of relatively few visits And give odds. [1] [2].

What does this mean for you?

Check the costs and the use of drugs, CA reports recently?

Around two million unemployed Americans will see their insurance, unemployment benefits expire right after Thanksgiving this year. the House of representatives voted against extending unemployment benefits to another 90 days. This means that a whole lot of people will have a very gloomy holiday season.

Unemployment insurance provides financial advantages for the Americans, who became unemployed due to no fault of their own.You can not just decide to quit your job to the advantage of collecting unemployment insurance. this insurance are people who lost their jobs because of the company or company closed. It is for people who were disconnected from the place of employment, because the company could no longer maintain the quantity of employees, it once had, due to changes in the economy. Every State has their own official Department determines who is and who is not entitled to unemployment insurance.

One of the requirements for collecting unemployment benefits is that the person should continue to seek work.Unfortunately, this means seeking work automatically, not to a job will be found. I have heard it said that there is something like five candidates each one job, there still exists. In many places only hiring part-time employees. This means that in the end, that there is a lot of Americans who are unemployed right now, and there have been unemployed for a very long time, despite their efforts to try to find work. There are also many people who have found part-time jobs that are still eligible for unemployment insurance, because the amount that they are doing from part-time jobs not anywhere near a living wage.

Unemployment insurance benefits typically last around 26 weeks. some people have been entitled to an extension. The current expansion is set to expire on 30 november 2010. the House of representatives voted against extending unemployment benefits to another 90 days.In short, it means that a lot of Americans will suddenly lose their unemployment insurance benefits without warning, just before Christmas.

I say adults, because a new study suggests that all children should be screened for high cholesterol. NPR recently aired a report on the study, which you can read and listen to here. Traditionally, cholesterol screening generally recommended for children with a family history of heart disease and high cholesterol. A new study found that these guidelines may miss a number of risk children .i didn’t know this before reading the piece in Time magazine, but since 2000 tonnes has offered free cholesterol screenings for all fifth graders in public schools. Researchers studied the results of their screening, and found that if the existing guidelines had followed (rather than the testing of any kind), they would have missed the 10% of the children who had elevated LDL levels. High cholesterol at a young age is a predictor of diabetes, which is why researchers are pushing for the test guidelines are subject to change. (Not all doctors agree, of course.) I think the problem simply underscores the severity of Youth health issues–obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol. No wonder that Michelle Obama has made her signature problem.

Posted by Corinne M. on Tue, May 11, 2010 @ 02:51 PM
You’ve purchased an individual health insurance plan with the right combination of benefits that works you’re your budget. When it comes down to using your plan and managing your health care dollars, becoming more engaged in medical decisions and asking questions helps ensure you’re maximizing your budget.

Since you’ll be paying for many of the medical services covered by your plan until you reach your deductible, you’ll probably want to make sure your treatments are cost-effective. If you have a PPO plan, you’ll automatically receive negotiated discounts by using network providers and hospitals. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t ask questions about how your health care affects your out-of-pocket costs, such as:

“Is this doctor in my PPO network?”
“Can this procedure be done on an outpatient basis?”
“Is this really an emergency?”
“Is there a generic available in place of this brand-name drug?”
“How much does this treatment cost?”

You may find the answers to these types of questions result in your finding more affordable alternatives. They might even open up additional dialogue with your health care providers in which you’ll learn more about how services are priced, how payments can be negotiated, and how you can budget for various future health care costs.

Asking questions and getting more involved in your health care decisions will impact more than the bottom line. You’ll also gain a better understanding of your body, medical conditions, treatments and options. This will naturally improve the quality of your care – and that gives you peace of mind that doesn’t have a price tag.

For more information on being an empowered patient, visit the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality website.

Despite the availability of screening tests, are almost half the cases of cervical cancer and colorectal cancer diagnosed in the United States in the late stages, when the disease is more difficult to treat.

That’s the conclusion of a report out today from the CDC, which also found that one third of the cases of breast cancer have been caught at a late stage. “More work is needed to widely evidence-based cancer screening tests for early detection and, ultimately, an increase in the number of lives saved lead can, “said Marcus Plescia, Director of the CDC’s Division of cancer prevention and control, in a statement.

The United States preventive Services Task Force recommendations for screening for breast cancer, colorectal cancer and cervical cancer (among other illnesses.)For example, the American Cancer Society. In the case of cervical cancer and colorectal cancer, actually screening tests can help prevent disease, as they identify tumors lesions or abnormal cells that can be removed before they progress in a threat to health.

Of course, screening tests are not perfect.Mammograms, for example, do not capture all tumors — some are not visible on the x-ray, and others grow fast enough to be dangerous when a woman has even regular mammograms. And tests shall bear their own risks — complications during a procedure, referral for further procedures that can harm and finding and treating the disease that poses a threat to the health wouldn’t have stood there left only.

But many people don’t order tests supported by scientific evidence and recommended by the USPSTF and the ACP.The report says that 62% of adults met recommended screening guidelines for colorectal cancer, while 81% of women aged 50-74 years reported they had a mammogram within the past two years and 88% of the women for whom cervical cancer screening was recommended said they received a pap test in the previous three years.

The incidence of late-stage disease varied by age, ethnicity and geography, for example, the CDC says., black men and women tend to have both higher rates of late-stage cancer — as measured by the number of cases per 100,000 people — and also higher percentages of late-stage cancer, which means that a larger proportion of the total cancer caught at a late stage. Incidence of late-stage colorectal cancer also increased with age, and late-stage breast cancer was highest among women aged 70-79. Late-stage cervical cancer incidence rates were highest among women aged 50-79 and Hispanics.

Read the full report for a list of the study constraints, including the self-reporting of the screening tests and lack of high-quality incidence data for the two States.
